![]() ![]() Over time, mochi will form a skin as it cools, so if you can work with it before the skin forms, that is best. There is no need to work with it while it is burning hot. Handling:Īllow the mochi to rest until cool enough to handle on a heavily mochiko-dusted surface. If the mochi hasn’t been steamed enough, it will not hold its shape. It’s better to cook for a longer time than too short a time, and as far as I can tell, it’s hard to overcook. When the mochi is done, it will change in color from white to almost translucent, and will no longer taste flour-y and gritty. In either preparation, be sure to allow the mochi to steam long enough. It is much, much easier to make in the microwave, and I suggest it. I never use my microwave for anything (it lives in the garage) and I STILL haul it out to make mochi. Mochi can be made in the microwave, a quick option that takes around 3 minutes, or on the stovetop in a double boiler, which takes about 20-30 minutes. The juices from the fruit will make the mochi wet and melty inside after a few hours in the fridge. Allow to soften for a few minutes before enjoying!ĭaifuku with wet fruit fillings, especially chopped fruit, should be eaten as soon as possible. Wrap the ice cream scoops and freeze again until firm. Instead of simply flattening the mochi into disks with your hands, use a rolling pin (a dumpling rolling pin is ideal) to roll the mochi out to slightly less than ⅛”– a thinner layer of mochi will be nicer to bite into when frozen. Try filling your daifuku with diced mango or ice cream too! To fill with ice cream, freeze small scoops of ice cream on a baking sheet for 24 hours. In Japan, the most common fillings for daifuku are red bean paste (aka koshi an) and whole strawberries. Daifuku pictured here filled with red bean paste! Daifuku Mochi Fillings Coconut mochi can be rolled in dessicated coconut, which is lovely. During recipe testing I thought I was a genius when I decided to dust with confectioner’s sugar– but my moment of pride was short lived because confectioner’s sugar dissolves and turns wet and sticky on the surface of mochi. ![]() Since it doesn’t taste all that great, cornstarch is my least favorite option. Potato starch is superior because of its fine, smooth texture, but mochiko is easy because it’s usually on hand, already being inside the mochi! Alternatively, cornstarch can be used, but cornstarch is VERY clingy, meaning it easily forms a thick layer on the mochi giving you a mouthful of cornstarch. Food coloring and flavor extracts can be added as well.įor dusting, I prefer mochiko or potato starch. To add flavor, I use dry ingredients like matcha powder and freeze dried fruits (I get my freeze dried fruit at Trader Joe’s!) Flavor can also be added with juices or purees in place of water. During recipe testing, I felt that the texture produced by the addition of corn syrup was more true to what I feel mochi should be. The addition of corn syrup keeps the mochi’s texture soft and smooth, and will also help keep it soft and pliable if it is stored in the refrigerator. Be sure to use confectioner’s sugar rather than granulated sugar to keep the texture smooth. Too little sugar means the mochi will be rubbery and tough. Sugar plays a big role when it comes to flavor and texture: it keeps the mochi soft and pliable, and adds flavor. Generally, mochi is 3 parts mochiko sweet rice flour, 3 parts water, and 1 part sugar. Mochi made with mochiko can be used to make daifuku, like the ones pictured here, little mochi bits to top frozen yogurt or ice cream, dango □□□(Dango even has its own emoji!), and a myriad of baked goods such as butter mochi. It’s really amazing to watch, but I won’t be making mochi this way at home any time soon (but ya never know.)Īt home, I use mochiko, a sweet glutinous rice flour that hydrates and develops gluten for a similar sticky and chewy texture to pounded mochigome rice. ![]() This preparation is done by a team of two people: one to stir and flip, and one to grind and pound. Then, while hot, the rice is ground and pounded with mallets in a large mortar until it forms mochi. The mochigome rice is soaked overnight and steamed. Traditionally, mochi is prepared in a labor intensive ceremony called Mochisuki. “Glutinous” meaning it contains a high starch content, not gluten. Mochi is the product of a glutinous short grain rice called mochigome. Mochi can be a lot of different things, so it isn’t only what’s pictured here! With the help of sweet, glutinous rice flour, it turns out making it at home isn’t that crazy– it’s even easy! So What Exactly Is Mochi? This mochi recipe can be used to make red bean, fruit, or ice cream filled daifuku or mini mochi bits to top frozen yogurt!īeloved in both Chinese and Japanese culture, mochi is an ancient and sacred food. ![]()

![]() In complete contrast to an ellipsis ("something missing"), it's common in casual writing to do something such as the following: the car approached the wall and then.bang!įor me a "lot of periods" kind of suggest "time passing" or "we're about to tell you the punchline" or "wait for it.". there's one single glyph which is an ellipsis.) ![]() Indeed, note that these days in most word processors, when you type three dots, it (sometimes annoyingly) converts it to the single ellipsis character. Note that an ellipsis has very specific meaning and purpose, that something has been omitted. The straightforward answer is: it is not an ellipsis. Mini-digression: In the 16th edition, Chicago eschewed simplicity and elected to use two different terms for ellipsis points, calling them ellipsis points when they indicate a real omission and suspension points when they show faltering or suspended speech or thought. The Chicago Manual of Style (16th ed., 2010) says, in section 13.39, that in dialogue the points show "faltering or fragmented speech accompanied by confusion or insecurity." It may be that this distinction between an ellipsis and suspension points is a fairly new one, though- this page seems to say The Chicago Manual of Style only started making the distinction in 2010:ĭescribing this other role of ellipses, The Canadian Style (2nd ed., 1997) says that they denote "a silence in dialogue, hesitation or interruption in speech, a pause in narrative, or the passage of time" (section 7.05). If the group "usually" consists of three, that seems to indicate that it isn't absolute, and it might be acceptable to use more to indicate a longer pause. Suspension point - mainly US one of a group of dots, usually three, used in written material to indicate the omission of a word or words. That answer quotes the Collins English Dictionary as saying: As mentioned in the accepted answer to this question on the English language & usage stack exchange, when periods are used to indicate a pause in speech-which is what is presumably going on with the Star Wars opening crawl-they are called "suspension points". I can’t find anything with Lucas acknowledging this, but there’s a good chance he used a four-dot ellipsis because that’s what Flash Gordon did.Īn "ellipsis" specifically refers to a set of three periods to indicate that some section of a quote has been omitted. I misjudged it – see comment for a more plausible spacing explanation. ![]() Notice that it ends with four dots, not three.Īnd maybe it’s just me, but it looks like the third and fourth dots are closer together than the first three – which might lend credence to the theory that the fourth dot is really a full stop. Here’s the final paragraph from the opening crawl of an episode of Flash Gordon: It cites the Revenge of the Sith DVD commentary, which I don’t have to hand, so I can’t check myself. Lucas has stated that the opening crawl was inspired by the opening crawls used at the beginning of each episode of the original Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers film serials, which were the inspiration for Lucas to write much of the Star Wars saga. ![]() According to Wikipedia, Lucas was influenced by Flash Gordon and similar programmes – he watched them as a child, which lead him to write his own space opera. ![]() ![]() If you're interested, you can get it online here. There were a couple times a quick flick of the wrist gave me the exact same roll as the person before me.īottom line is this is something you should own if you want to play Catan on the road, or even on vacation and are scared of losing pieces to careless cousins. If the numbers of the terrain hexes your settlements are adjacent to are rolled, you receive resources. At the beginning of the game, you and your opponents each build 2 settlements on the island of Catan. Another small gripe is the miniature dice kit needs a good shake to truly get a random roll. CATAN Traveler is based on the same rules as the CATAN base game, its big brother. The regular Catan Game is a very immersive and time-intensive experience. The Catan Dice Game may be one of the best travel games currently available. The game variety can still be changed in multiple formats, but not nearly as many as a standard board. Catan Dice Game Players in the mood for commerce, business, trade, empire-building, and exploration can find a travel game that caters to their interests as well. There is a rather small flaw in that not every tile is removable, but rather multiple tiles are fixed in puzzle form. When you're on the road, you've got nothing but time, and it really changes the dynamic when you've got nothing better to do than wait! The ability to have a one-on-one game is certainly a plus, and the rules aren't that much different! Now all those worries of losing or damaging the Catan game components as you travel are over This compact edition is an amazing new travel version of Catan. So many games of Catan are ruined by players whose greed and lack of bargaining cause the game to drag on for hours at a time. Obviously this is the version you want to use if you're traveling in a car, train, or plane.but why would you even want to play Catan in such a situation? Time. The settlements, roads, and cities all can be placed in fixed pegs as to better cope with the bumps and turns in the road, and if you're limited on players, there's even a separate set of rules for a two player game! Cards have a convenient holder for handing out resources, and all four players' pieces fit snugly in slots below the plastic game board. The cards are about a fourth of the size of regular cards, and the pieces and board are of course miniature as well. In style, it's not at all different from regular Catan, just smaller. It's everything you love about Catan, but in small travel size form! Having played it a couple times with friends, I have to say it's my preferred way to play. Stepping away from map variations comes a new version in the form of Settlers of Catan: Compact Edition. You can buy the original, a Star Trek edition, a board that looks like your state.etc. ![]() Far more interesting than Monopoly, and require more tactics. The Zereca, although still in a weakened state, have already begun to spread darkness over Arcan in preparation for their full awakening. Trouble lurks across the horizon, however, as both Aika and the Zereca have begun to stir from their repose. Three hundred years have passed and the Humans have prospered upon Lakia, the land of the sky. ![]() Heartsick and spent, Aika fell into a deep sleep, and the fragments of her own power within the Zereca caused them to share her slumber. With her remaining power, she lifted Lakia and the survivors upon it into the sky, away from the predations of the Zereca. She called upon the Great Prophet Giovanni of the Humans to command a mass exodus to the region of Lakia. Filled with remorse, she realized that there was no hope for the Zereca, a race created in anger, and that she must somehow shield the Humans from impending doom. She watched, horrified, as the Zereca ran bloodthirsty with power, bringing the Humans close to extinction and forcing them to hide in fear. Tika grew weary from her many efforts to devise a faultless world. The Goddess released the Zereca upon Arcan. She desperately imbued her third creation with fragments of her own limitless essence-the better to overpower those whom they were destined to preserve or condemn. It was in this unhappy state that she conceived the Zereca, a race of arbiters to act as judge, jury, and executioner for the Humans. Arcan, her first and most precious creation, was quickly becoming overrun by Humankind’s hatred and destruction.Īngered and embittered by the Humans’ excesses, Aika vowed to create a race which would cleanse the land of its defilement. She set out to correct her error in the genesis of the Humans, a race whose inherent balance of good and evil would inspire the meaningful struggle which the Scinic had so sorely missed in their peaceful lives. ![]() They wished only to sleep under Arcan’s fertile ground until a time in which their lives could have more meaning, a request the Goddess granted, albeit sorrowfully.Īika, in her wisdom, recognized that she had failed in her first attempt to create the perfect creatures to live in harmony on the world she had brought out of nothingness. The Scinic elders blamed Aika for the lack of purpose which gnawed at the very core of their society, corrupting the goodness which lay within them. After three centuries, however, the Scinic grew restless and disenchanted with the complacency of their existence. To people this gentle land, Aika fashioned the Scinic, a kind and just race who cared for Arcan and preserved the harmony with which the Goddess had infused their birth. The world of Aika features five nations - each possessing its own distinct personality and populated by thousands - which, along with a comprehensive guild system, lays the groundwork for truly epic military clashes. However, it is the depth of the PvP system that sets this game apart. With over 1,000 quests, hundreds of monsters, and 15 gorgeously rendered areas, Aika holds its own as a thrilling single-player experience. This comprehensive PvP system is unique among current MMORPGs for its gigantic scope, and it is this element - along with a fantastically detailed world and sweeping storyline - which has earned the game many enthusiastic reviews for its quality of play. Designed to re-imagine the "massively" in MMORPG, Aika presents three major PvP modes which run the gamut from small skirmishes to 1000 vs. Considerable treasures and blessings await the most powerful nation in Aika, with each nation ruled by a player Lord Marshal whose supreme power is supported by a guild regime.
